Introduction to the PCC

What does the PCC stand for?

Press Complaints Commission

Briefly explain what the PCC is.

The PCC deals with complaints from members of the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines.

What are the ‘codes of practice’?

The code of practice is a list of all the things that the editors must include the public’s interest expectations. This sets the benchmark for protecting both the rights of the individual and also the public’s right to know.

Accuracy
Opportunity to reply
Privacy
Harassment
Intrusion into grief or shock
Children
Children or sex cases
Hospitals
Reporting of Crime
Clandestine devices and subterfuge
Victims of sexual assault
Discrimination
Financial Journalism
Confidential sources
Witness payments in criminal trial
Payment to criminals

When does it act?

The PCC’s code of practice comes into act with any article written by editors. Main articles in newspapers for example are always tested against the codes of practice to ensure that the rights of an individual are protected and that the public’s right to know is in check.
